Hard-chrome and decorating chrome plating – Do they differ from each other?

We usually get attracted with the reflective, shiny surface due to the presence of chrome. This type of glossy finish results in a very high-end, clean appearance, which is really captivating. However, most of us do not have the right conceptions on chrome. We do not know how decorative chrome plating is different from hard-chrome plating.

Chrome plating technique is intended to electroplate a chromium layer onto the plastic or metal item. By applying the chromium layer, you may turn an object into the most appealing and decorative one. You will be able to clean the object very easily. However, the object becomes much harder. Thus, durability and aesthetic value – both may be added with chrome plating.

We have categorized chrome plating process into 2 ways:

  • Hard Chrome plating
  • Decorative Chrome plating

Decorative Chrome plating – Know about the process

This decorative one is intended to be applied for the decoration of trims, racks, furniture, wheels, and several other objects. You may also call it as the process of nickel-chrome plating. After the use of nickel, you do chrome plating. The base, chosen for this plating, can be aluminum, steel, copper, plastic and different alloys.

The nickel layer adds rust resistance, smoothness and high reflectivity, and this layer is much thin. You will find blue tint on the chromium layer.  However, the underneath nickel is yellowish in look. The layer for chrome gives a protection against the blemishes or scratches. With no presence of nickel, there will be no decorative and shiny look.

Hard chrome plating Is it right for you?

In this plating process, you can apply thick involves chromium coatings to sustain the oil retaining capacity and to add resistance to damages. This process is intended to increase durability. Due to the high level of thickness, we call it as the hard chrome plating. Although you may find shiny appearance, there is nothing decorative. For the car bumpers and wheels, this plating is the right choice.

Now, it is the right to make choice between two above options. Both of them are highly useful options to you. However, you have to pick the appropriate one on the basis of using the plated element.

To make your decision, you have to focus on various factors-

  • The surrounding conditions of using the chosen component
  • Its chance of getting worn
  • Presence of moving parts in the component

Thus, choose the right plating option for your advantages!
